Software firm BMC has announced the acquisition of GridApp, a database automation and provisioning software developer.

BMC said that the deal will add database automation to its existing roster of application, server, network and client configuration management tools to provide what it claims is an all-encompassing business service management platform.

“BMC has continued to aggressively advance its mission of simplifying and automating IT, enabling it to respond adeptly to the needs and priorities of the business,” said Scott Fulton, BMC’s vice president and general manager for service automation.

“The acquisition of GridApp adds substantive automation capabilities to our portfolio, and strengthens our Business Service Management platform, creating the most efficient, consistent and comprehensive path to IT value in the industry today.”

The GridApp software will also be added to BMC’s Cloud Lifecycle Management solution, meaning that hosted and virtual systems will fall under its administrative remit.

BMC claimed that the tools will help enterprises tackle some of the most complicated areas of their applications while removing the skills challenges, and will improve flexibility and productivity.

Red Hat has announced its intention to buy Makara, an application deployment and management software developer.

Makara’s software is pitched at developers creating applications for the cloud, and Red Hat said that the purchase will boost its Cloud Foundations portfolio and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings.

“Cloud Foundations is about enabling customers and developers to have an easy on-ramp to the cloud,” said Paul Cormier, president of products and technologies at Red Hat.

“With the addition of Makara, we aim to further simplify application deployment and management. We welcome the Makara team and look forward to accelerating our delivery of PaaS solutions to the market.”

Red Hat plans to integrate the Makara Cloud Application Platform with the JBoss Enterprise Middleware infrastructure at some point in the future.

Integration with JBoss will enable interoperability with the main enterprise software packages and systems, according to Crenshaw, and will make transferring applications to servers, hybrid systems or the cloud a simple and largely automated process.

Red Hat will link reports generated by the Makara system to its Cloud User Portal and JBoss Developer Studio.

On February 8, 2010 Oracle announced it has agreed to acquire AmberPoint. AmberPoint’s solutions help organisations diagnose and resolve issues in application performance and business transactions.

Acknowledged as a leader in SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) Management, AmberPoint has been recognised for its innovation in SOA Management, Business Transaction Management and run-time SOA Governance. The combination strengthens Oracle Fusion Middleware solutions to further enable customers to reduce IT costs and improve customer satisfaction. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2010.

Effective SOA Management has become increasingly important as organizations seek to improve business processes and application performance. Management of transactions such as account provisioning and insurance claims processing typically requires multiple applications to work together. The complexity is further magnified since these applications are often developed, deployed and managed by different teams. Having an effective SOA Management solution in place can accelerate the diagnosis and resolution of issues in application performance and business transactions before the business is impacted.

This combination transforms the IT industry. With the addition of servers, storage, SPARC processors, the Solaris operating system, Java, and the MySQL database to Oracle’s portfolio of database, middleware, and business applications, Computacenter plan to engineer and deliver open and integrated systems—from applications to disk—where all the pieces fit and work together out of the box. Each layer of the stack will be architected to improve performance, leverage innovation and centralise management so that IT will be more predictable, more supportable, and more secure. Customers will benefit as their system performance, reliability and security goes up and their system integration and management costs go down.

Computacenter is a major partner for both Oracle and Sun, so don’t hesitate to contact your Account Manager if you wish to discuss your Oracle and Sun requirements further.
